Misallocation and intersectoral linkages

چکیده

We analytically characterize the aggregate productivity loss from distortions in presence of sectoral production linkages and show key role input substitutability. analyze various forces behind non-monotonic effect substitutability on loss. then use second-order approximation to find that for moderate distortions, low reduces intermediate-input suppliers. Moreover, when elasticity substitution is low, do not systematically amplify Using model calibrated industry-level data 35 countries, we insights obtained are relevant context caused by market power, even with large observed data. In particular, using Cobb-Douglas functions (unit elasticities) instead accounting (less-than-one leads overestimating a factor 1.8.

Growth Through Intersectoral Knowledge Linkages

The majority of innovations are developed by multi-technology (or multi-sector) firms. The knowledge needed to invent new products is more easily adapted from some sectors than from others. Here, we study this network of knowledge linkages between sectors and its impact on firm innovation and aggregate growth. We develop a general equilibrium model of multi-sector firm innovation in which inter...

Productivity Gains , Intersectoral Linkages , and Trade : Indonesian Manufacturing , 1980 - 1993 ¤

The importance of R&D spillovers for productivity growth has been well-documented in the literature. While studies in the context of developed countries have extensively focused on sectoral linkages, research on North-South spillovers has been largely con...ned to the aggregate level. In this paper, we pursue the objective of ascertaining the contribution of international R&D spillovers to manu...

Skill Bias Magnified: Intersectoral Linkages and White-Collar Labor Demand in U.S. Manufacturing

This paper presents a novel stylized fact and analyzes its contribution to the skill bias of technical change in U.S. manufacturing. The share of skilled labor embedded in intermediate inputs correlates strongly with the skill share employed in final production. This finding points towards an intersectoral technology-skill complementarity (ITSC). Together with input-output linkages, the observe...

Misallocation and Growth

Endogenous growth model in which training is a by-product of production, and when both firms and workers are heterogeneous. Two-period OLG. The young must work with the old, and as a result an assignment problem arises. We can calculate the transition dynamics analytically when the skill of the young is log-normally distributed and the initial human capital of the old generation is also log-nor...

Misallocation and Establishment Dynamics

The gap between marginal revenues and marginal costs of inputs (i.e., distortions or wedges) at establishments potentially lower aggregate total factor productivity (TFP) by preventing efficient allocation of resources among incumbents, deterring entry and exit, and affecting technology choices. We investigate the impacts of distortions on aggregate TFP, entry and exit, and establishment-level ...
